Creating a Coaching Ecosystem in Higher Education: The SIT Experience

Have you ever wondered how coaching is being applied in higher education? What are the unique characteristics of an educational environment which create opportunities for coaching to happen?


In this session, Dr May Lim, Associate Professor, and Mr Ramesh Shahdadpuri, Senior Educational Developer and Coaching & Mentoring Trainer from Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Singapore's first University of Applied Learning, will share with us the SIT experience in coaching. Topics include:


1. What is coaching in (higher) education?

2. Who are the key stakeholders in the education space?

3. Creating the coaching ecosystem in educational settings.

4. Lessons learnt and what lies ahead - opportunities and challenges.

About the Speakers:


Dr May Lim

Dr. May Lim is an Associate Professor at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). She is the Assistant Provost (Applied Learning). May is an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) coach, a member of International Coaching Federation (ICF), and and a certified Solution-Focused Coach who builds a coaching culture for educators to develop students beyond the classroom. May actively looks for coachable moments to develop her students holistically.

She has developed a gamified platform named AdventureLEARN that has been used by more than 3000 students for improving learning, resilience, and well-being. She won the university Teaching Excellence Award in 2016, 2018 and 2020 and Education 2.0 Outstanding Leadership Award in 2022. Her research interests are transition, coaching, self-efficacy and resilience, approaches to learning, and developmental disabilities. May is an experienced occupational therapist by profession, she has been working with children with developmental delay and disorders in Singapore and Australia.


Mr Ramesh Shahdadpuri

Ramesh is Senior Educational Developer and Coaching & Mentoring Trainer with Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), where he leads the faculty coaching training programme, community of practice and other university coaching initiatives. He is a graduate of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Ramesh is an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with International Coaching Federation (ICF), and has a Professional Certified Corporate Coach certification from Singapore Management University (SMU). Ramesh has served on the Executive Committee of the ICF Singapore Chapter. His coaching interests include coaching in education, coaching psychology, internal coaching, team coaching and youth coaching. His other research interest areas are people and organisational development, positive psychology, and workplace learning.

Ramesh has held specialist and leadership positions in Singapore and overseas, and worked with government agencies, educational institutions, multinational corporations, local SMEs, non-profit organisations and start-up enterprises. He is an active volunteer with various arts, heritage and social organisations.
