Event Details

Youth is often described or over-generalised as a period of "storm and stress". From the perspective of developmental science, youth is a period when young lives can pivot rapidly, in negative or positive directions. The session begins by highlighting cognitive and socio-emotional development at this stage of lifespan and understanding how this development affects decision making. Understanding factors that contribute to mental well-being is of great importance to facilitate coaching healthy development.

In this session, we will identify coachable moments for people who work with youth whether in education, work or other settings. We will also identify major turning points and decision opportunities to offer coaching to youths. We will discuss strategies to create a safe space for coaching, by resisting the urge to offer direct answers but empowering youth towards their solution. Through understanding the strengths of the youth of today and hearing their voices, we can tap on their assets and resources to coach them towards their preferred future.

Takeaways:

  • Identify coachable moments when working with youth

  • Discuss cognitive and socio-emotional development of youth that affects decision making

  • Recognise major turning points and decision opportunities to offer coaching for youth

  • Create a safe space while appreciating the strengths of the youth of today for effective coaching
